Lyons Construction is the 2012 Regional Builder of the Year, for the second year in a row

At the Master Builders Association of Victoria awards ceremony again held at the Crown Palladium Lyons Construction were awarded the 2012 Regional Builder of the Year for the Deakin University - New Generation Library.

The project was located at the Waurn Ponds Campus. It involved the refurbishment of an existing building over three levels. The new building
reflects the integration of modern learning experiences breaking away from the traditional library model. These include a cafe, quiet and collaborative study spaces combined with a reduced book collection allowing for increased emphasis on electronic technologies. The clever use of raw and recycled materials combined the atypical design features such as neon lighting, contrasting dark and light spaces, coloured glass and a book feature wall. The book feature wall was undoubtedly the most unique aspect of the project. The book wall screened the internal staircase linking the second and third floors. Made from thirty thousand (30,000) disused books recycled from the library's own collection. Construction required books to be sawn in half and painstakingly glued together one by one; the whole process taking two months to complete.
