Lyons Construction wins three at Master Builders of Victoria Regional Building Awards.

Lyons Construction was successful at the recent Master Builders Regional Building Awards being awarded Commercial Builder of the Year for the South West Region. Lyons Construction was also awarded Best Custom Home over $700,000 for the Hodges Residence – Queenscliff and Excellence in Construction of Commercial Buildings over $6 million for the Kardina International College Katsumata Centre.

The two projects awarded on the night:

Hodges Residence – Queenscliff

The striking beachfront residence captures the incredible views across Port Phillip Bay the property is built over three levels including an in-ground garage. Designed by multi-award winning John Wardle Architects the building’s exterior comprises of a wide pallet of materials, including folded zinc cladding, spotted gum shiplap and timber battening and timber-grain off-form concrete which complements its beach front setting.

On the ground level operable Spotted Gum walls can slide across the bedroom windows allowing light to enter or to protect the building from the harsh coastal elements. On the upper level full height glazed windows can slide across leaving the building fully open to the environment bringing the outside in. Inside highly detailed Blackbutt veneer timber joinery is used throughout and is combined with imported with hand selected Callacata marble. The feature of the staircase is the Rattan reed screen imported from Malaysia and painstakingly hand-woven through vertical stainless steel supports.

The complex detailing and harmonious integration of high quality materials mixed with the coastal environment make the Hodges Residence a stunning property.

Kardinia International College – Katsumata Centre, Bell Post Hill

The new Katsumata Centre at Kardinia International College named after the late Yoshimaro Katsumata the school’s founder combines both striking design and multipurpose functionality.

The complex building program includes of an entrance foyer, multi-use sports courts, spin room, general classroom, change room facilities, staff offices and a recreation room. The most unique feature of the building is who the main gymnasium space can convert from sports courts to a 900 seat theatre for assemblies and performances.  The retractable seating imported from Korea and used for the first time is Australia assembly required exhaustive collaboration between Lyons Construction and the engineers based in Korea. 

The imposing exterior comprises of steel, glass and alucobond cladding. Architects James Deans & Associates spent four months detailing the faceted glass facade, combined with the angular coloured alucobond the facade reflects the light in multiple angles adding to the impressive composition.  Inside the building hundreds of square metres of Aktar panelling were used to the walls and ceilings all installed to intricate patterns. . . . more details.
